US MARKET: LEAD – BAN AT SHELVES, PHTHALATES – BAN TO IMPORT
Thursday, 08 January 2009 19:00

Starting on 10 February 2009, the new limit of 600 ppm for the total content of lead (excluding varnishes and paints) will come into force for accessible parts of:

  • toys,
  • childcare articles,
  • products for children. Based on recent interpretations, products that do not comply with the new limit starting from that date can not be imported, sold, marketed as sample or shelved in America. There will be a BAN AT SHELVES.

Starting on 10 February 2009, the ban to import of toys and childcare articles (including bibs and pyjamas) containing phthalates will come into force:

  • DEHP, DBP and BBP will be permanently banned from all toys and childcare articles,
  • DINP, DIDP and DNOP will be temporarily banned from all childcare articles and toys which can "be placed in the mouth."

In California the ban of PHTHALATES has been in force since 1 January 2009 and that Proposition 65 requires a specific labelling concerning the use of an additional phthalate (DnHP).
