SAFETY OF TOYS - US MARKET: ASTM F 963-08 has been harmonized

Recently, the new standard ASTM F963-08 “Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety” has been harmonized by CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

From August 17 2009, the new standard must be mentioned in the CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY.

New version of the standard - List of main changes:

  1. toy chest, with a volume of 1,1 ft³ (0,031 m³) or more, are no longer covered by the standard;
  2. requirements for safety of toys with magnets have been changed;
  3. the requirements for yo-yo elastic tether toys have been added;
  4. flammability procedures have been changed and  new procedures have been introduced for the flammability of fabrics;
  5. continuous sound pressure level requirement no longer applies to pull/push toys;
  6. folding mechanism and hinge requirements have been changed;
  7. new requirements for toys in the shape of a nail, screw or bolt, weighting less than 0,5kg and intended for children between 18 and 48 months of age have been added;
  8. new requirements for jaw entrapment in handles or steering wheels of toys intended for children up to 18 months of age has been added.
