US New standards for childcare articles
Tuesday, 02 June 2009 19:00

In the USA the new version of the standards ASTM F404-08 for high chairs and ASTM F 406-08a for non full size baby cribs/play yards have been recently published.

The main changes in ASTM F404-08 are the following:

  1. It is underlined that all protective components that are accessible to a child sitting in the high chair or accessible to a child from any position around the high chair shall be evaluated.
  2. The requirement for the harness system has been detailed.
  3. There is a new requirement for lateral protections.
  4. It has been determined a special test harness be used to perform the test on the harness system, which requires to lift the CAMI Dummy upward.

The main change in ASTM F404-08a from the previous version is that the requirements for cords are now applicable also to straps. This requirement aims to avoid strangulation hazard for the child, since some accidents have been occurred in products with a changing surface from which the straps to harness the child during the change, have been left hanging freely inside the cot.

A new standard for infant bath tubes has been published: ASTM F2670-09 "Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Bath Tubs.“

The standard ASTM F966-00 "Consumer Safety Specification for Full-Size and Non-Full-Size Baby Crib Corner Post Extensions" has been withdrawn without any replacement.
