CORDS and DRAWSTRINGS in children’s CLOTHES
Wednesday, 28 December 2011 10:29

In Europe there are groups (TC 248 WG 20 Safety of children’s clothing) working on the revision of the standard EN 14682- Safety of children’s clothing – Cords and drawstrings on children’s clothing – specifications.
The main purpose of the work is to clarify various requirements and specify in detail, in Annex C, the rationale for
the exclusion of some items from the scope of the standard.
At the international level more and more countries establish specific safety requirements for the use of drawstrings in baby clothes, as for example:

• in the U.S.A., the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) published the final rule in the Federal Register, stating that the clothing items not satisfying the requirements of ASTM F1816-97 constitute a substantial danger to the consumer;
• the ACCC in Australia (Australian Competition Consumer Commission) issued a guideline to regulate
the use of drawstrings which recommends a risk assessment of clothing, using as normative references EN 14682 and ASTM F1816;
• in Taiwan the standard CNS 15291 regulates the use of drawstrings in children’s clothing until the age of 12 years.
