EUROPEAN REGULATION on the LABELLING of FIBER CONTENT

The new European regulation on the fiber content denomination and labelling on textile products was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 18 October 2011. The new regulation will become effective on 8 May 2012 and products placed on the market before that date can remain in commerce until 9 November 2014, date after which they should be removed from the market or corrected in accordance with the new requirements.
Among the many changes introduced by the new regulation, there are in particular:

• the label indicating the fiber content shall be securely attached to the product;
• new rules for the use of the words “other fibers” are established;
• new test methods for the quantitative analysis of fibers are introduced;
• animal origin non-textile parts shall be declared in label (example: contains non-textile parts of animal origin).
